Tactics—strategic planning of communications

All organisations need to communicate to their customers, clients and stakeholders and with their staff. Planning your communications ensures that the information you disseminate is appropriately targeted and presented; delivered in a timely manner and is cost effective.

The Info Focus team can help you with the planning process. We can do a communications audit (that is, review what you have been doing) brainstorm ideas for improving or expanding your communications plan and crystallise the whole thing into a strategic plan.

It starts with a set of simple questions:

  • Who is your target audience? Is it staff, clients, stakeholders or all three?
  • Are there any other target groups?
  • What are the main messages or types of information you want to communicate?
  • What is the purpose of your communication? Is it to persuade, educate, inform or entertain?
  • What is the call to action (what do you want your target group to do when they have received your communication)?
  • How will you present the information? Will it be an advertisement, brochure or web page?
  • What is your budget for communications?
  • When do you need to communicate this information?

Planning your communications goes hand-in-hand with project management because it determines what projects or communication tasks your organisation should be undertaking.
