The term editing covers a broad range of tasks. Editors can cut unnecessary words, refine and polish the language, correct inconsistencies and alert authors to problems or imbalances in the text. They also make sure the document is readable, complete and does not contain defamatory material.

There are two types of editing:

substantive involving major reworking to fix structural and rewriting and style, or
copy editing correcting punctuation, spelling grammar and making sure the corporate style guide is followed.
